正如其名称所示，无铁芯直线电机的初级元件（线圈组）中没有铁芯。其初级元件线圈嵌置在非磁铁芯体中。而其次级元件一般是U形，有两块磁轨（也称为磁轭）相对而立。无铁芯线圈组在磁轨间的空间运动。
由于电机线圈组中没有铁芯，因此其线圈组和磁轨之间没有吸引力。
